General AI is approaching

The waves

From Ada Lovelace's first program to today's advanced generative models, technology has continuously reshaped our technological expectations. In recent decades, we have all used machine learning or deep learning tools on a daily basis. However, in recent years, we have seen how AI has evolved exponentially and has directly impacted all processes within organizations.

Mustafa Suleyman, in his book "The Coming Wave", provides an insightful analysis of these technological disruptions and how they are causing society to radically shift its paradigm. The author relies on the concept of "waves" to explain how AI is impacting society.

Generative AI and General AI

Yes, we are living in a technological wave that is moving at great speed. Who would have told us just 2 or 3 years ago that we would be able to have generative conversations with an AI model? The impact that Generative AI has had on business environments is (and still remains) huge.

We define Generative AI as the one that is capable of analyzing all the existing data in its knowledge base and generating new content. But, BEWARE! These models use probability to predict the best output based on the input provided.

For example, Generative AI models analyze all the words in their database and calculate the most likely word to begin the response. Then, they predict the following words based on the probability that they will occur together. Therefore, Generative AI selects probable combinations of words to fit the context of the input. This is how new content is generated. So, models that can replicate humans are not capable of learning on their own.

Now, in recent weeks, we’ve seen different news, like Sam Altman saying that OpenAI knows how to build a General Artificial Intelligence (AGI) model. This is where everything changes. AI, at present, can replicate and work based on the training it has been given. AGI is the point at which AI is capable of performing any human cognitive task, even better than humans themselves. These models (in theory) will be able to learn on their own: they won't replicate; they will create.

The fact that AGI can have systems capable of acting autonomously has many implications. Theoretically, there has been much speculation about the impact of this autonomy. For example, these models could be aware of the consequences of their actions. And in this way, they could reflect on these consequences to act differently the next time. This may sound (and be) dizzying, but the most important thing is knowing how to adapt to the moment, the context, and this new technology.

Surfing the wave

These new and dizzying technologies, combined with the volatility of the world, are (and will be) a tangible reality. In the face of this paradigm, organizational and operational adaptation is the key to focusing all efforts on generating value. Predictions for building AGI models begin in 2030, but tomorrow doesn’t matter, because the uncertainty five years from now is huge. What matters is the organizational capacity to adapt all our resources to these changes.

The reality and what is tangible is that Generative AI is among us. The inclusion of Generative AI in our processes to optimize effort with a clear value-added focus should be a priority for any company looking to adapt to change.

At SADE, we want to accompany those organizations immersed in this adaptation process. We know that the road to transformation can have bumps, and in a world where information protection is critical, choosing the right tools is not just an option but a strategic necessity.

Technological progress has demonstrated that data security and governance are essential to prevent information leaks that could undermine the foundations of any company. That’s why solutions like Fujitsu’s PrivateGPT, designed with security at its core, are key to ensuring a reliable and robust adaptation in our processes.

The wave that’s coming is big, but at SADE we’re ready to help you surf it successfully, ensuring that your organization not only reaches the shore but also achieves the true value that technological transformation offers.
